The *slightly* cooler almost-fall temps here in Georgia have been dreamy this past week. We took a bunch of nice (humidity free!) walks and even visited Gibbs Gardens for the first time (highly recommend!). I felt so inspired after the trip to Gibbs that of course I spent hours doodling flowers afterwards. It also got me thinking about the different ways to use that floral artwork and that’s where today’s tutorial comes in 🌼

This week I’m sharing not only how to paint a sketchy style fall bouquet (no drawing experience necessary!), but how to save it out as a transparent graphic and then how to use that graphic on 3 different applications. So it’s basically 5 tutorials in one: paint a fall bouquet, save it as a transparent graphic, then how to make 3 different designs with it. Get ready for lots of fun this week! 🤩

My newest Skillshare class, Watercolor Textures for Graphic Design, went live on Monday, and I’m so excited to share that nearly 1,000 wonderful creatives have already enrolled in the class! Creating watercolor textures from scratch – the act of sitting with a brush in hand, swirling colors together in unique ways – is one of my favorite times to relax and kind of let the art be made without thinking too hard. It’s definitely easy to lose track of time once you get started, but also awesome to then have so many cool new textures to work with. If you’re ever short on ideas on how you can start using those newly created textures, today I’m rounding up a bunch of inspiration with ways to start applying your watercolor textures in graphic design. Read on to see them all!

It’s that time of the year when there are a bunch of events to celebrate: graduations, weddings and anniversaries from weddings before. Confetti is obviously a must have, real and digital. 🙂 That’s why we’re creating our own digital custom confetti brush in Photoshop in this week’s video tutorial! We’ll create the shape of our confetti, adjust color at the slide of a knob, and even control how much it scatters in a few quick and easy steps. Prepare to start confetti-tizing all of your digital celebration themed work from here on out 🙂 Let’s get started!

A few weeks ago I posted about my first Skillshare class, Laying out Your Lettering for Letterpress, and I am so excited to say that over 400 students have enrolled! If you love letterpress and have always wanted to learn how to set up a file for letterpress printing, this class was made especially for you – and you can get one full month of free membership by using this link if you’d like to check out my class or others 🙂

Anyway! Getting down to business – for those students that have enrolled (and anyone that might still be sitting on the fence) I have 2 (Two!) FULL YEAR subscriptions to skillshare to give away! If you’ve checked out any Skillshare classes before, you know how valuable this is! All you have to do is watch the class, create any hand lettered invitation you’d like, and post your project which should follow the project description. Out of the projects posted, I’ll pick 2 to give the free full year memberships to which I’ll announce May 4th. So! If you’d like to participate, make sure your project is posted by then! To get your hand lettered invitation wheels turning, here are 10 swoon-worthy letterpress invitations for inspiration.

Happy Tuesday! This past weekend was reallllly busy for me! I designed our wedding invitations and recorded a Skillshare class on the entire process from start to finish: all of the research, sketches, lettering experiments, then finally setting up and saving the file correctly so it’s ready to hand off to my letterpress printer. You can watch the free intro to the class (called Laying out Your Lettering for Letterpress) here and just for my blog readers and YouTube watchers, I’m sharing one the other videos today. This video covers the sketching process of lettering based on research which determined the look and feel we were going for (Southern rustic). If you’re interested in seeing the rest of the class, you can sign up for Skillshare free of charge for an entire month using this sign up link.

As Spence and I continue brainstorming our wedding invites, I’ve had flourishes and frame elements on the brain a lot lately. It’s so much harder (but so rewarding!) when you’re designing something for yourself! This past weekend I designed a whole set of flourishes + frames in my pursuit to exhaust every option. 🙂

My flourish extravaganza has led to this week’s freebie: a set of vector flourishes and frame elements for Illustrator, CS3 or newer.

Happy Tuesday! And Happy Veteran’s Day! My father is a veteran (Marines), both of my grandfathers were veterans (both Navy), and my brother is currently an Air Force pilot, so I have lots to be proud of and grateful for today 🙂 Spence and I actually just got back from California visiting my brother, his wife, and my brand new nephew (born in July) who made me an Aunt for the first time. I’ll be posting a few pics soon from our too-short-of-a-trip. With family on the mind and knowing I’ll be seeing my family again soon for the holidays, this week’s freebie is a set of 2 hand lettered holiday invitation printables. Both are sized 5″x7″ and can fit perfectly in any A7 envelope. If you’d like to pick up the greeting postcard editable version of these + 2 more, you can grab them here.
