Create a Flat iMac Icon in Adobe Illustrator

Happy Tuesday! I’ve had a few requests to create flat-style illustrations, so this week we’re creating a flat iMac icon in Adobe Illustrator! If you’ve ever been unsure of how to get started with vector icons, or you’d like to practice your shape-based illustration skills, this tutorial is perfect for beginners. We’ll be utilizing the rounded rectangle, rectangle and ellipse shapes the most and keep things super simple throughout. If you had a chance to check out my graphic design story, you heard me mention that I wasn’t asked for my resume in past interviews. I want to clear something up though; that doesn’t mean I didn’t have one ready in case I was asked.

As a creative, a resume takes a big back seat to your actual portfolio, but every interviewer is different, and you want to make sure you’re always prepared, just in case. Because a resume falls so secondary during an interview, I would recommend spending as much time on your portfolio as possible and keeping your resume simple, clean, readable and to the point. Create a Sophisticated Hand Addressed Envelope

There’s nothing quite like receiving a beautifully hand addressed snail mailed card, note or correspondence. There’s also nothing quite like creating that very same mailbox surprise for someone else.

I looooove hand addressing envelopes in all kinds of different styles (suited for the person and the occasion, of course). It’s one of my most favorite things to letter and I can’t believe I haven’t created any video on it yet! That’s all about to change this week and next week with a two part envelope address lettering series! We’ll start this week with sophisticated lettering for more formal notes (for delivery to traditional folks or for classy occasions) and we’ll cover playful and whimsical lettering next week (reserved for the hippest of family, friends and events). A Modern Love

On March 5, 2012, I started my previous job. While I had met many of the people who worked there my first week, the sound of a guy’s voice who I was sure I hadn’t met yet (because I knew I would have remembered that voice) caught my attention. I could hear it coming from the stairwell, around the corner from where I sat back then. On a group lunch outing, we had finally officially met. Spencer – tall, dark hair, brown eyes and a soccer player’s calves. A girl could do worse, haha. But we both worked together and that kind of thing can get tricky if you’re not both 100% sure of taking that leap. By the end of that July, we threw caution aside and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

Freebie: Printable Hand Lettered Mother’s Day Card

Can you believe Mother’s Day is next Sunday! NEXT Sunday! Mother’s Day never gets forgotten in my family – My mom was born on Mother’s Day (the year she was born, her birthday – May 13th – was Mother’s Day) and then my youngest sister was also born on May 13th, so she was born on my mom’s birthday AND it was Mother’s Day that year! It was so coincidental the local newspaper wrote an article about us, so we still have the clipping of me at 4 years old sitting on the hospital bed with my brother, my 2 sisters, my dad and mom. My Dad’s dad was born on New Year’s Day and my Mom’s dad was born on Christmas – so it actually gets even crazier, but we’ll save that for another time 😉

Anyway! In celebration of moms, this week’s freebie is a printable hand lettered Mother’s Day card. It’s sized 6″x4″ folded, so it’ll fit in any A4 envelope. Send it out early and get extra points! 🙂

5 Affordable Wacom Tablets

I remember when I received my first Wacom tablet in the mail. I was filled with pure excitement to finally interpret my doodles directly on screen. The brush tool in both Illustrator and Photoshop immediately became my favorite thing. Since then, I’ve used the tablet to create lettering professionally, edit detailed photography, and apply a hand drawn feel to other projects. As a designer, you typically think ‘expensive’ when you hear the word Wacom. Maybe because they’re known to be the best brand of tablets for designers that money can buy, but you’d be surprised to find out an affordable Wacom is within reach! So, if you’ve never owned a tablet before and you’ve always wanted to draw, edit or doodle on screen, it can be done for less than $100. Seriously!

Save a little dough this year and show you care by going diy. 😉 This week’s freebie comes in 3 color schemes: red-orange, plumb + gold.
