If you’ve been following my Instagram, you know how obsessed I’ve been lately with lettering using a waterbrush! It combines two strong passions of mine – watercolor and typography and I can’t get enough! Since I’ve been experimenting like a crazy woman, I wanted to share some tips I’ve learned over the past few weeks. I’m no expert by any means, but I’ve gotten into a rhythm and I’ve been really happy with how I’ve improved by remembering a few simple things. If this is something you’d like to try, my hope is that this video will save you time, money and supplies. Tips for Lettering Using a Waterbrush

Oh man your an amazing teacher. I’ve been looking and playing with calligraphy but I’ve come to the conclusion that brush hand script is what I really love. And this water color is giving life to my creativity. Now I need to find an alphabet example to practice. Thank you for your guide videos!!!

yay! Finding the waterbrush was such a game changer for me – if you’ve been playing with calligraphy, I know you’re going to love brush script with a waterbrush! My next Skillshare class is going to expand on the waterbrush more than anything I’ve posted so far – will be released in just over a week 🙂

Thanks so much for the tutorial, the speed is just perfect.
Do you have any advice on how to make nice letters? Do I begin with copying certain fonts? I see a lot of hand/brush lettering artwork that have similar letter designs. I don’t find applying pressure an issue – I get stuck with the letters itself because I don’t know how to make them look.

Printing lettering styles out that inspire you and tracing over them is a great place to start with letterforms – my next Skillshare class is being published October 19th and it’s going to take everything from the tutorial and take it a bunch of steps further, including different techniques for getting the letterforms down, so look for that soon! 🙂

Hi! So I watched your tutorial on brush lettering where you filled your water brush pen with ink instead. I was just curious about the cleaning of the brush! Do u just wash the nib piece and leave the ink in the reservoir? I bought the pieces, but I just want to make sure I take proper care of them. Thanks! 🙂

Also,, I don’t know if it’s the brush or the ink I got, but for me when I used the water brush with ink in it, it looked more like I was painting with black water color than using ink. It’s like the nib didn’t keep enough ink it it, and it would often streak. But if I squeezed more ink into it, then it would just drip 🙁 what should I do?

It sounds like it’s the ink you’re using. I’ve found the Speedball Super Black to be the best because it gives me the most opaque black as I letter. As for cleaning, if you plan to use it again within the next week, no need to clean it! Just cap it off and you’ll be good to go. If it’ll be longer before you use it again, empty the ink from the water chamber back into the container, then fill it with warm water and squeeze through a few times. The tip will likely remain stained black, but it’ll clean out the valve system + tip, which is the important thing 🙂

I wouldn’t, since canvases are best suited for oil or acrylic and these brushes are best suited for watercolor
