I’ve been playing around with several different Halloween-themed animations, trying to pick the right one for this year (here’s last year’s!), but once I landed on this one, I knew it was the one. It’s definitely a little different than what you usually see from me, but the (surprisingly easy) animated flame/smoke effect was something I couldn’t resist sharing.

With Halloween closing in on us this coming weekend, I couldn’t let it pass without something to celebrate! This week, we’re creating some multi-colored glowing outline lettering, adding some spider webs and even including our little friend dangling off of one of the letters. We take it even further by adding in a simple animation to the spider, too! And we’re only using one brush for all of it!

It’s the last Thursday in September, which means it’s time for your free October 2018 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was entirely created in Procreate, with just the dates added in using Photoshop and my font, Miss Magnolia. It’s officially Fall! Since October is the spookiest month in the US, I had to add some cute webs to this month’s wallpaper 🙂 I used my custom monoweight procreate brush for the web details and base lettering, which is available for free in the Every-Tuesday Resource Library. The texture shading was added using the default chalk brush in the calligraphy tab in Procreate. For the dates, ‘R’ is for Thursday, to distinguish it from a same-sized Tuesday ‘T’ at a glance.

The download includes the October 2018 desktop wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any October in the future, too!

It’s the last Thursday in September, which means it’s time for your free spooky/eerie October 2017 desktop wallpapers! I’ve been away from my watercolors a little more than I’d like, so it was time to bring them back for October! The ‘spooky’ texture was created using a saltwater wash with this Winsor & Newton pan set and a no.8 round brush. ‘October’ is set in my font, Hawthorne Script, and the dates are set in my other font, Espresso Roast (caps style). The texture was scanned in and everything was combined + enhanced in Photoshop.

Spence doodled out this adorable Frankenstein the other day and I just had to bring it to life in Illustrator! Since flat illustrations/icons are still very popular these days, I decided to draw it out in a flat illustration style with a half face shade and a long shadow. This would work great on a party invite, perched atop toothpicks on Halloween themed cupcakes, printed out life sized on a front door, or tied around candy goodie bags. This same style could be adapted for a ghost, witch, pumpkin and/or skeleton to create a full set. Video tutorial below along with the template sketch used in the tutorial!

This week’s freebie is a set of 10 hand drawn vector spider webs to add a little more creepy crawly to your Halloween designs this year. 😉 Set includes corner webs and full spider webs to make positioning, cropping and usage a piece of cake. A bonus couple of dangling spider vectors also included for good measure. 🙂 All vector elements are included as an ai, eps and psd file for versions of Illustrator and Photoshop, CS3 or newer!

Happy October! I had so much fun creating the September wallpaper, I think I’m going to make wallpapers a new regular monthly post (it’ll also keep me from having the same wallpaper for 2 years – eek!). Since it’s Halloween month here in the US, I had to go a little spooky with this one 😉 . In the spirit of ghosts and goblins, I created some hand drawn skeleton lettering for your October desktop wallpapers! The download includes two common resolutions: 1920×1080 and 1280×1024 with and without dates; preview images below!
