How to build on the basics and delight with detail

My 4 year old daughter and I have been making pancakes lately. A LOT of pancakes (starting to think it’s mostly a ploy for all-you-can-dip syrup at this point). Because she’s 4, we started out by simply following the recipe: pour the mix in, stir in the water until the batter is just right, then head to the stove. Once making pancakes each day became a thing, keeping it basic got a little…yawn after awhile.

Spoiler: anyone who freehands beautiful line art florals practiced them by tracing or copying them at some point in time. Instead of just tracing them this week with one line, we’ll be pulling a section of florals from an existing bouquet, customize it to fit our needs, then bring the line drawing to life by adding some digital watercolor with pretty blends to finish it off. Although it starts with a basic trace, it finishes with a completely original piece of work you can use for any occasion. ✨

This week, we’re drawing a wrapped flower bouquet in Procreate! We’re adding a little bit of complexity to things by creating several floral elements and working in a very organized fashion with layers and groups. We’re also adding in a few shadow elements to add dimension to the whole piece. We’ll finish it off with a sweet message – hand lettered or with editable text.

Happy Tuesday! This week we’re returning to one of my favorite styles: flat florals! This style is very beginner friendly; the hardest part is keeping your layers organized as you work so you can move and manipulate your elements as your flat fall bouquet comes to life. In this video, there are a bunch of elements, so if you want some good layer practice, this is it 😉
