Next Monday, March 26th, I’ll be releasing my newest course titled Watercolor Florals for Graphic Design! I’m often asked how I created this watercolor leaves and florals kit, so I thought I’d share the entire process, from start to finish. In the course, you’ll learn how to paint, scan, digitize, enhance and sell digital watercolor florals. Part of creating florals meant to be used digitally (in Illustrator, Photoshop or templates you’d like to sell) require them to be created individually (vs. painting a full bouquet). Once they’re created and edited, you can then create an infinite number of arrangement and bouquet combinations using them. This makes painting just a few florals to start with really powerful, because they can lead to a large kit full of options.

Even though the course officially opens next Monday, today I wanted to share a video from the course on how to paint 4 loose style small watercolor florals. I’m giving away the course’s clickable resources list for free in this post, so you’ll have everything  you need to get started. It’s the last Thursday in January, which means it’s time for your free February 2017 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was created with a Micron 05 (.45mm), scanned in and vectorized in Illustrator. I cleaned up my vectors using my iPad Pro + Astropad app (here’s how I do that). I then colorized and sized it in Photoshop using my Glitz+ Glam Kit as well as the watercolor patterns from my Watercolor Texture Kit Vol. 3. Finally, the dates were added in (the ‘R’s’ stand for Thursday so as not to be confused with Tuesday). Yep, not the quickest process, but I love making em 😉

The download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any February in the future, too!

Somehow, it’s already the last Thursday in December, which means it’s time for your free January 2017 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was created with FineTec watercolors using a small Pentel waterbrush on Astrobrights (Eclipse Black) cardstock. It was then photographed with a DSLR by Spence and brought into Photoshop where he adjusted color + vibrancies. After that, I resized the artwork and added dates within Photoshop, making it ready for use. So, this little guy is a labor of true wallpaper love 🙂  The download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any January in the future, too!

Happy June next week! May usually feels like such a long month, but this one went a little quicker than usual with all of the planning and prep for my newest Skillshare class, Intro to iPad Lettering (launching June 6th!), as well as a few new digital goodies in the Every-Tuesday shop. I’m also finishing up my next hand drawn script font (SO excited for this one!) which will be available mid-June 🙂

Did you know the 21st was the first day of Summer? 4 days ago, the world’s position said ‘I grant you Summer’ and we here in the US said, ‘why, thank you. I accept.’

Maybe that was just me.

I moved to Savannah, Georgia in 2006 to finish my undergrad at SCAD but also to escape the 6 month winters (that’s not a joke) Upstate NY so generously gifted me the previous 20 years. I grew a special love for summer waiting for it to come, while I shoveled snow every October through March. So, summer and I go way back, and even though summers are a bajillion times more intense in the South (now Atlanta) than I ever experienced in the North, it’s something I look forward to every single year.

Do you guys get as sucked into a hand drawn repeat pattern as I do? When a great one catches my eye, I typically stare it down for at least 1-3 minutes. I’m not kidding. There’s something totally hypnotic about it that I can’t resist. I started a pattern inspiration board on pinterest a while ago and ever since, my stream has seriously toyed with my time. I get stuck there so long! This post is also taking me the longest to put together because I’m getting re-mesmerized with each delicious one. It’s a small sacrifice, but I think it’s worth it 🙂 Here’s a roundup of some of my recent favorites from pinterest, and some you can even own if you’re in the market. Enjoy!

Can you believe Mother’s Day is next Sunday! NEXT Sunday! Mother’s Day never gets forgotten in my family – My mom was born on Mother’s Day (the year she was born, her birthday – May 13th – was Mother’s Day) and then my youngest sister was also born on May 13th, so she was born on my mom’s birthday AND it was Mother’s Day that year! It was so coincidental the local newspaper wrote an article about us, so we still have the clipping of me at 4 years old sitting on the hospital bed with my brother, my 2 sisters, my dad and mom. My Dad’s dad was born on New Year’s Day and my Mom’s dad was born on Christmas – so it actually gets even crazier, but we’ll save that for another time 😉

Anyway! In celebration of moms, this week’s freebie is a printable hand lettered Mother’s Day card. It’s sized 6″x4″ folded, so it’ll fit in any A4 envelope. Send it out early and get extra points! 🙂
