Do you guys get as sucked into a hand drawn repeat pattern as I do? When a great one catches my eye, I typically stare it down for at least 1-3 minutes. I’m not kidding. There’s something totally hypnotic about it that I can’t resist. I started a pattern inspiration board on pinterest a while ago and ever since, my stream has seriously toyed with my time. I get stuck there so long! This post is also taking me the longest to put together because I’m getting re-mesmerized with each delicious one. It’s a small sacrifice, but I think it’s worth it 🙂 Here’s a roundup of some of my recent favorites from pinterest, and some you can even own if you’re in the market. Enjoy!

Welcome to Typins #4! This post is where I share my recent favorite typography pins from pinterest. I’m obsessed with (and if you’re here, I’m sure you are too!) and have boards for general typography (phrases, quotes, full words) written beautifully, just letters and just numbers. I pull from those boards for these posts, so there’s even more over there if you’re craving a bigger type fix 🙂  Here are 8 of my current favorite pins to get your type on!

A few weeks ago I posted about my first Skillshare class, Laying out Your Lettering for Letterpress, and I am so excited to say that over 400 students have enrolled! If you love letterpress and have always wanted to learn how to set up a file for letterpress printing, this class was made especially for you – and you can get one full month of free membership by using this link if you’d like to check out my class or others 🙂

Anyway! Getting down to business – for those students that have enrolled (and anyone that might still be sitting on the fence) I have 2 (Two!) FULL YEAR subscriptions to skillshare to give away! If you’ve checked out any Skillshare classes before, you know how valuable this is! All you have to do is watch the class, create any hand lettered invitation you’d like, and post your project which should follow the project description. Out of the projects posted, I’ll pick 2 to give the free full year memberships to which I’ll announce May 4th. So! If you’d like to participate, make sure your project is posted by then! To get your hand lettered invitation wheels turning, here are 10 swoon-worthy letterpress invitations for inspiration.

If you’ve ever found yourself working on a project searching for just the right image, but only finding overpriced stocky looking images instead, you are not alone. My frustrations peaked about 2 years ago when I was working on collateral for a law practice (do photos get stockier than that?) and, after going through shutterstock, istock and yes, even ridiculously priced getty, I’d had enough. I knew there had to be a site with photos priced for real people that weren’t so obviously staged. So, after searching the typical sites, I adjusted my google query, panned + mined, then struck gold. This week, I’m here to share the photo wealth 🙂 Read on for my go-to sites for the best in free + affordable photos.

Brush script style fonts have been gaining in popularity – from hand drawn versions to vector point-perfect variations. Brush script styles lend themselves to applications with character and personality, an artsy organic feel, or just an extra human touch. This versatility gives brush scripts a well deserved spot in any font library. Here are a few for free and for a fee to round out your brush script font collection.

I think this blog makes it pretty obvious I’m a big fan of anything handmade 🙂 And I loveeee typography – it’s the reason I got into design in the first place. So, if we put those two together, we get this post! Handmade fonts are gaining popularity in a big way, especially on Creative Market (the best seller from all of last year was a handmade font!). So here are 8 handmade fonts to add to your collection, all of which happen to be super affordable, too!

One page websites have gotten really popular these days! When I got hired at my current job, I split my time between design + working production for the first year. During that time, I looked at a lot of designers’ files and it taught me sooo much. My point to saying this is – even if you’re not looking to code up a psd, just download one or two of these 5 free one page website psds and check them out. Digging into even one file could inspire and even help with learning how to design your own.

I remember when I received my first Wacom tablet in the mail. I was filled with pure excitement to finally interpret my doodles directly on screen. The brush tool in both Illustrator and Photoshop immediately became my favorite thing. Since then, I’ve used the tablet to create lettering professionally, edit detailed photography, and apply a hand drawn feel to other projects. As a designer, you typically think ‘expensive’ when you hear the word Wacom. Maybe because they’re known to be the best brand of tablets for designers that money can buy, but you’d be surprised to find out an affordable Wacom is within reach! So, if you’ve never owned a tablet before and you’ve always wanted to draw, edit or doodle on screen, it can be done for less than $100. Seriously!
