iPad Lettering: Create Floating Shadows in Procreate

Happy Tuesday! It’s been a little while since we made some iPad lettering, so this week we’re creating floating shadows in Procreate. I’ve seen this effect referred to as ‘off shade’ before, but I’ve always thought of them as floating shadows. Essentially, it’s a drop shadow that’s disconnected, or there’s a space between your lettering and the shadow itself. I love how simple this effect is, but also how it adds that cool factor/semi 3D look right away. See how to apply this exact effect to your lettering below!

How to Recolor Textures in Procreate

I realized the other day that I did some short mini vids on Instagram wayyyy back on how to recolor textures in Procreate, but never a tutorial here. Introducing textures into your Procreate work can create some pretty stunning, unique results. Using textures myself led me to offer the procreate watercolor kit and metallic kit, which I still use constantly. The silvers and golds from the metallic kit look stunning, but you can change their colors to anything you’d like! Colors like rose gold and blue glitter are a cinch to make, and in this week’s video, I share how!

iPad Lettering: Using Vectors with Procreate

One of the questions I’m asked most often about iPad lettering is how to use vectors with Procreate. The very short answer is: you can’t. But! There *are* some workarounds you can use if you’d like to either integrate your vectors within Procreate or vectorize your Procreate artwork later on. iPad Lettering: Using Multiple Procreate Textures

Since Procreate’s latest update is less than a month old, it’s time for a new iPad lettering tutorial! If you checked out my iPad Lettering class from a couple versions earlier, you saw how fun it is to work with Procreate textures. One texture works wonderfully, but things can get a little trickier when you want to get other textures involved. In this week’s tutorial, I’m sharing one quick trick that makes introducing other textures super simple. In this tutorial, we’ll use a foil and watercolor texture, plus add a little holiday flair for good measure 🙂 Read on to see how!

iPad Lettering: Recreate the Stranger Things Logo

This week is really fun. I was brainstorming some iPad lettering tutorials where I could share quick tips without being overwhelming, and recreating the Stranger Things logo came to mind. Spence and I finished binging on Stranger Things a couple months ago, but even now, I still can’t wait for the next season! It’s also extra cool that it was filmed in Georgia (gotta find that lake!) *and* I’m a child of the 80’s. Perfect match you could say.. But! I digress 😉

Today’s the last Thursday in August, so it’s time for your free September 2016 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper is another doodle explosion (hopefully in a good way!) brought to you via an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil + Procreate app. This download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left ‘2016’ off of the ‘no-dates’ jpgs, so you can use this for any September in the future, too!

Since today is the last Thursday of July, it means it’s time for your free August 2016 desktop wallpapers! This month you could say I went just a little bit overboard, but if you like a leafy doodle explosion on your screen, then it’s probably the perfect amount. 🙂 This was created on an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil using the Procreate app, then exported and edited a little further in Photoshop. My iPad Lettering Process

I wanted to change things up a little this week and go super down to basics. The truth is, when it comes to learning, a lot of the times, I’m most inspired by just *watching* the thing happen. Seeing it take place, someone else’s process without all the nitty gritty little details along the way – just the ‘have-to-knows’ first. Maybe you’re like that too. On the chance you are when it comes to lettering, this week I want to go super simple and just share how I would do a basic lettered quote/phrase on the iPad – what I think about as I’m writing, what I’m paying attention to, and what I do to change course when maybe things aren’t going exactly how I like them. How to Create Custom Procreate Brushes

In my Intro to iPad Lettering class, we went through the entire library of brushes Procreate offers (which is amazing) and we also went over how to alter those same default brushes. If you’re looking for something less standard and more custom, Procreate allows you to create your own brushes from scratch, too! I love thinking up a doodle or a texture I haven’t seen in their library and being able to start using my own right away. In this week’s tutorial, I’ll share my full process on how to create custom Procreate brushes from scratch using Photoshop to perfect the design or texture and Procreate to apply brush settings.
