If you’ve been here before, you already know I’m crazy about watercolor – traditional or digital. A couple years back, I shared how to vectorize watercolor textures, so today I want to share the process I use to vectorize watercolor lettering. We’ll start by creating our watercolor lettering traditionally using Arteza watercolor brush pens. Next, we’ll scan it into the computer, then finish it up by vectorizing in Illustrator. A while back, I created this tutorial where I shared 10 lettering enhancements anyone can do. The responses to the video have been amazing, so this week I wanted to take things a step further with a lettering shadows version! I remember sitting in my Color Theory 2 class at SCAD (12 years ago!) and we were given an assignment we had to use gouache for. ‘Gouache?’ I thought, “Can’t be that different from acrylics, can it?”

It was the first time I had ever heard of it, let alone had any knowledge of how to use it. Since sitting in that classroom that day, I learned that 1. yes, it is definitely different than acrylics and 2. it’s actually pretty amazing.

In this week’s tutorial, I’m taking you through gouache basics – how to mix colors, water ratios + what makes it so amazing to work with. Together, we’ll paint leafy gouache letters (or shapes!) that can be used for wall art, stationery or gifts! Read on to see it all!

In the US, Mother’s Day falls on May 12th this year. After giving birth to our daughter on December 28th, this will be my first Mother’s Day as a mom! I wanted to celebrate by creating artwork that can be used as a greeting card as well as wall art! In this week’s tutorial, I share my process on how to paint a watercolor floral initial. Happy almost-Halloween! With all the fun crafts that Halloween inspires, I couldn’t let it pass without adding a DIY to the mix! It’s been a little while since we had a craft tutorial and this is my biggest one yet. This week, we’ll create some mixed media 3D Halloween lettering you can use as decoration anywhere! We’ll plan it out + paint it with watercolor, add details with fineliner pens AND add some sparkle to finish it off. I’ll take you through my process of painting 3D, pop-off-the-page lettering, as well as how I plan out flourishing to frame the final piece.
