We’re kicking off my annual holiday tutorial series this week with tutorial number 1 of 6! I’ve got a bunch of fun projects for you this year that you’ll be able to repurpose however you’d like for both digital and stationery needs! Today, we’re starting with some easy evergreen doodles using chalk brushes for that nice hard + soft feel, then finishing it up with hand lettering and a textured, two toned border.
When it comes to lettering in Procreate, I’m often asked how to create lettering on a curve. Unfortunately, Procreate doesn’t currently have a way to type along a path (which would be the perfect template), so we have to get a little creative, but it *can* be done! This week, I’m sharing two ways you can do it.
I was working on some new tutorial ideas the other week while binging Top Chef (as one does) and realized I had only used one brush for this entire piece. I love the idea of making something where a viewer would never realize it was made so simply, so this week we’re grabbing one brush (use any pressure sensitive one you’d like – I used the Bumpy Ink Brush) and let’s get drawing!
It’s Tuesday! Time for another tutorial 😉
A few years ago, I shared how to create a pattern letter effect using Adobe Illustrator and I randomly came across that tutorial and wanted to give it a try in Procreate, too. With a few masking tricks and a custom diagonal line pattern brush, pattern letters in Procreate were born! This tutorial is one of my most advanced ones to date, so if you haven’t taken my free Procreate 5X for Beginners course yet, you’ll want to watch the masking module in that first. Once you understand the steps, though, this is a super fun effect you can apply to your typography or even abstract shapes for some really unique outcomes!
If you’ve been here before, you already know I’m crazy about watercolor – traditional or digital. A couple years back, I shared how to vectorize watercolor textures, so today I want to share the process I use to vectorize watercolor lettering. We’ll start by creating our watercolor lettering traditionally using Arteza watercolor brush pens. Next, we’ll scan it into the computer, then finish it up by vectorizing in Illustrator. A few weeks ago, I asked on my Instagram if anyone wanted to learn how to make animated gifs in Procreate. After reading through the responses, I knew I couldn’t stop with just one! So I created 2 tutorials 😉 The first one is meant for beginners: getting the basics down + understanding how the file needs to be built. The second tutorial is a bit more advanced, since we utilize masking to make ‘drawn in’ lettering. Now that Procreate offers an export option for animated mp4s, it’s even easier to post your animations straight to instagram. Read on to see both tutorials!
