One of Spring’s first cues here in the south are moths flying around porch lights in the evenings. This sent me down a rabbit hole of ideas and searching through pages of moth photography 😂There are just.soooo.many! And many beautiful ones I had never seen before. Instead of just illustrating a moth, this week, we’re adding a little doodle magic and lots of fun, gritty texture. ✨
I’ve had numerous requests recently for a vid explaining how I create my color palettes, so that’s what we’re talking about this week! This is a big topic since there are so many different ways to create harmonious color palettes. This video focuses on my favorite go-to method which I’ve found to be pretty fail safe. You may have seen this style of lettering floating around instagram and created in Procreate on an iPad. In this week’s tutorial, I share how to create the same effect, but in Illustrator. By using Illustrator, everything can be infinitely rescaleable since it’s vector-based. We’ll utilize some features you may not be aware of that you can use for future work, too. This week, we’re returning to one of my favorite topics: watercolor textures! Ever since I received these brush pens in the mail, I have been swooning over all of the cool textures I’m able to create – and quickly, too! These are the most vibrant watercolor-simulated outcomes I’ve been able to achieve with brush pens, which makes the creation process that much more fun. Use these as backgrounds for your lettering, or even scan them in and make a digital texture or repeat pattern out of them! When I first started using Procreate, I just selected the colors I needed at the time and went on my merry way. Once I became more comfortable with the program, accessing quick, harmonious color palettes dramatically changed (and improved) the feel of all of my artwork moving forward. Spending the time to experiment with and decide on the right color combos became increasingly more time consuming, though. Thinking about how I choose color palettes for my graphic design artwork, I realized I could utilize the same tools, but in a different way using Procreate. In this video, I’ll share how I now put together quick color palettes in Procreate in a matter of minutes. Once you see how easy it is, I promise, you’ll never look back!
