Welcome to the first week of holiday hand lettering projects! This is a new tutorial series spanning 6 weeks, starting today. Every Tuesday, we’ll create a new holiday-inspired lettering project you can then use on your holiday stationery (like gift tags, greeting cards, homemade ornaments, etc.). The goal of this series is to gain some new lettering tricks, learn about lettering supplies you might not have used before and to create something you can use/gift right away. Since we’re starting in early November, you’ll have plenty of time to practice and prepare for December celebrations. I also have another surprise that comes with participating in these weekly projects below!

This week, I thought I’d go completely analog with a DIY watercolor ribbon Father’s Day card. I love taking handmade creations digital, but every now and then – especially for sentimental holidays, you can’t really beat 100% handmade 😉 With Father’s Day coming in less than a week, you’ll still have time to seal this in an envelope, stamp it up and get it in a mailbox in time. Creating custom brushes in Photoshop is one of my favorite things to do! I love using them for lettering (paired with a wacom tablet), extra decorative elements or just to add a little bit of unique style to whatever I’m making. What’s even better is that they are really quick and easy to make and Photoshop offers a ton of settings to truly make them original. If you’ve checked out my Intro to Photoshop class, you could easily integrate a custom brush to really make your layout special!

In this week’s tutorial, I’ll walk you through what all of those settings do and we’ll create a custom brush in Photoshop together. At the end of the tutorial, you’ll have everything you need to start creating and using your own brand spankin’ new brushes 🙂 Everything is below!

One of my favorite things is taking a doodle and reimagining it digitally. If you’ve been here before, you know that’s true! One thing I find myself doing a lot with my mini doodles lately is turning them into seamless pattern brushes so they can connect to make (any length) dividers, laurels – you name it. There’s a little trick to getting them seamless and once you do, they are so much fun to play with. In this week’s tutorial, we’ll take a mini doodle, vectorize it, make it seamless, then convert it into a multi-purpose, seamless pattern brush in Illustrator. Read on to see how easy it is!

I have been working well into the wee morning hours this past week preparing for my new Skillshare class coming early next week. I don’t want to give it entirely away, but there are some pretty vector elements + watercolor textures involved! I’m sooo excited about the class I wanted to give a tiny sneak peek of what I’ve been spending all that time on! Since vector elements play a big role in the class, I created a monster set of over 100 hand drawn vector leaves and flourishes. This set was created for people who may not want to spend as many hours as I did making them 🙂 Today I want to give away 5 of them for free!

This blog is a little overdue for a freebie! With the templates I create, I typically draw out a bunch of different elements, scan them in, then clean them up – very much the same process I use for vectorizing hand lettering. There are always some elements I wish I had used, but they never quite make it onto the design. This week’s freebie are some of my favorite hand drawn dividers that I plan on using for something, but rather than leave them sitting in a folder, I’m giving all 10 of them to you!
