How to build on the basics and delight with detail

My 4 year old daughter and I have been making pancakes lately. A LOT of pancakes (starting to think it’s mostly a ploy for all-you-can-dip syrup at this point). Because she’s 4, we started out by simply following the recipe: pour the mix in, stir in the water until the batter is just right, then head to the stove. Once making pancakes each day became a thing, keeping it basic got a little…yawn after awhile.

I’ve been playing around with a new style that I’m calling ‘fantasy florals’ and sharing my progress over on Instagram. It’s been so fun to experiment with different techniques (especially when they work 😅) and exploring different ideas as one builds upon another. So far, I’ve decided this is my favorite leaf type within this style and it’s the most fun to make, too. I’ve been so grateful for the encouragement and the requests for tutorials for it, so I’m here to deliver! Today I’m sharing my full, radiant leaf-making method and it’s beginner friendly, too!

I’ve received a few requests lately on the method I used to create my email recap header graphic, which is also my current youtube channel art. Here’s what that looks like:

That piece took 90 minutes to make, so this week, I’m breaking the same process I used down to 7 minutes. We’ll make a bouquet with 3 different simplified flowers anyone can paint and fill in our gaps with leafy foliage and eucalyptus! I’ll even provide the composition sketch so you can get painting right away 👏 And if you’d like to take it one step further and add in some line art to your messy gouache flowers, check out this tutorial.

I’ve been playing around with my new Bouquet Maker brush set non stop lately and combining it with some of my past brush sets to see what I could come up with. Once I started experimenting with the gouache set, I knew I had to share this process!

I’ve had a few requests for advanced tutorials lately, so we’re closing out the year with my most advanced tutorial to date: complex ribbons! If you’re brand new to Procreate, you’ll want to take my free course before tackling this beauty. We’ll be combining selections, masking variations and depth effects, along with determining hierarchy within our ribbon folds. Ok, I know summer is coming to an end (I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m not ready!) and we’ve had the sweetest little wild strawberries growing by the country roadside in Georgia, so this is me clinging onto what’s left of the season in one last summer-ish tutorial. Plus, how cute and delicious does this little gem of a berry look?! 🍓 (Don’t worry, I’ve got brand new fall tuts in the queue – they’re on their way!)

With Father’s Day just around the corner, I couldn’t help myself with creating a little dad joke art for the occasion 🙂 You may have seen this similar tutorial I made last year, but this year, I wanted to try it with my gouache brushes and integrate the lettering into the art for a full composition. I also wanted to share a realllllly easy trick to create center highlights and a vignette that you can add to any background to give it more focus and make it *pop* 😉

We’re wrapping up my mini gardening series this week with a gouache wheelbarrow of flowers! While it’s the most challenging of the three vids in this series, we’re using many of the skills we’ve used before. I’ve also packed it with a bunch of new tips I haven’t shared anywhere before (like adjusting a sketch layer’s proportions and adding depth to a flower arrangement to make it seem fuller). The pace is a little quicker since we have a lot to get through, but remember! You can always go into ‘drunk Teela mode’ (the official name) and slow me down by hitting the little gear icon in the bottom right corner of the YouTube player and changing the playback speed 😉

Happy June! Time to kick off video no.2 of 3 in my mini gardening series with an herb garden! My real cilantro was MIA this week, but I’m loving having fresh thyme and basil every week. I’d love to start a vegetable garden now that we have the outdoor space (we currently grow our herbs indoors), but there was a chigger incident last summer (if you don’t know what they are, brace yourself if you look them up!), so Spence and I are both a little scarred still. We’ll get there, but this will not be the year 😂

With the beautiful weather we’ve been having in the US South, I’ve been soaking up every minute of sunshine I can get before it turns sweltering this summer. Spence and I moved last year to the country, so this year I’ve started a flower garden and I’ve been adding more potted plants to our interior, too. With gardening on the brain, what started as one tutorial idea evolved into a mini series of 3 gardening illustration tutorials! This week, we’re kicking off video number 1 with some gouache gardening supplies 🌱
