Today I’m excited to announce my newest online course, 3D Lettering in Procreate! This course will walk you through all of the tools, workflow and effects needed to create believable + stunning, pop-off-the-screen dimensional iPad lettering! The course was created with beginners in mind and includes an entire ‘beginner basics’ section to get you comfortable with 3D essentials so you can feel confident heading into the advanced projects later on in the course. No lettering experience is necessary – I share my trick for using existing typefaces if that’s something you’d prefer 😉 The course also comes with ALL of the original Procreate files from the videos, so you’ll have them as reference if you ever need them. Happy Tuesday! This week, I’m excited to revisit the world of watercolor lettering – one of my favorites, for sure 🙂 When Spence and I left our previous jobs, our coworkers gifted us the book, Shadow Type, by Steven Heller and Louise Fili. The binding is already breaking on it, from obsessing over the perfectly executed lettering from back in the day. It’s high on my list of type books, without a doubt. Anyway! As I was looking through it the other day, one of the images caught my attention and I wanted to try it with watercolor. I practiced it over and over until I had a process I was happy with. This week I’m sharing that process – of how to create a debossed watercolor lettering effect.

It’s time for your free March 2017 desktop wallpapers! I apologize for the tiny delay in this one going up – we had to move all of the site’s content over to the new design last week, so I wasn’t able to post anything new while that happened. As long as you still like these, I’ll keep makin em! 🙂

This month’s wallpaper was created with this Winsor & Newton watercolor pan set and a no.4 round Winsor & Newton Cotman brush. I used my newest font, Miss Magnolia, to typset ‘March’ (as well as the dates) and applied the gold foil texture from my Glitz + Glam kit. You’ll notice a subtle watercolor paper texture on the background too, which is part of the Watercolor Textures Vol. 3 kit 🙂

The download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any March in the future, too!

It’s the last Thursday in January, which means it’s time for your free February 2017 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was created with a Micron 05 (.45mm), scanned in and vectorized in Illustrator. I cleaned up my vectors using my iPad Pro + Astropad app (here’s how I do that). I then colorized and sized it in Photoshop using my Glitz+ Glam Kit as well as the watercolor patterns from my Watercolor Texture Kit Vol. 3. Finally, the dates were added in (the ‘R’s’ stand for Thursday so as not to be confused with Tuesday). Yep, not the quickest process, but I love making em 😉

The download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any February in the future, too!

Somehow, it’s already the last Thursday in December, which means it’s time for your free January 2017 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was created with FineTec watercolors using a small Pentel waterbrush on Astrobrights (Eclipse Black) cardstock. It was then photographed with a DSLR by Spence and brought into Photoshop where he adjusted color + vibrancies. After that, I resized the artwork and added dates within Photoshop, making it ready for use. So, this little guy is a labor of true wallpaper love 🙂  The download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any January in the future, too!

Happy December! Now that the holiday season is in full swing, I wanted to offer up a fun hand lettering technique for your (any time of the year) stationery, too! This ombre embossing effect is SO eye catching *and* I have a technique that avoids mixing your embossing powders together. Using this technique, you’re able to maximize the life of your powder purchases and create beautiful outcomes, too. Plus, look at the colors on black! Happy almost Thanksgiving! (here in the states, anyway 🙂 ) Since we’re hitting the end of November, it’s time for your free December 2016 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper pattern design was originally created with concentrated watercolors and a no.1 round brush on Canson 140# cold press watercolor paper. It was then scanned into the computer where final touches, recoloring and dates were added in Photoshop. The download includes the wallpapers in two common resoutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any December in the future, too!

Today’s the last Thursday in October, so it’s time for your free November 2016 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was hand lettered on an iPad Pro using an Apple pencil. Here are a few more details: the glitter texture is from the Procreate Metallic Texture Kit. The brushes used were a slightly modified (default) studio pen and brush pen in Procreate. This download includes the wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. Today is one of the biggest days to date on Every-Tuesday. Our very first long-form, self hosted course (only available on every-tuesday) is officially open today, titled Brush Lettering with Watercolor!

Two years ago, I decided to go all-in with my brush lettering. I tried (what felt like) every supply out there, watched demos, looked at inspiration, read books, you name it. My lettering was improving very slowly, and I experienced a lot of frustration. A lot of overwhelm. A lot of second guessing. It felt like I was doing everything right, but my outcomes just didn’t feel like they were quite there. I started implementing a few new techniques and that’s when things really took a turn for me. I remember the night it finally came together so well, like I had cracked a special code.

This month’s wallpaper was hand lettered with the super-fun-to-play-with FineTec metallic watercolors. The paper is Neenah Astrobrights Eclipse Black, which actually holds up perfectly with the metallics. FineTecs are naturally on the thicker side, so they sit right on top of cardstock like they were meant to be together 🙂 . One of my favorite uses for the hand lettering I create is vectorizing it and using it digitally. When it’s digital, you don’t just have one copy anymore; you have unlimited copies. Unlimited copies leaves the door to digital and physical prints massively wide open. By taking a few simple steps, you can quickly digitize your lettering, clean it up in Illustrator and create a print ready file in a matter of minutes. Like I said, one of my favorite things 🙂 This week, I share my full process on how I do it by creating a hand lettered birthday card in Illustrator!
